Ron's RV7 Aircraft Factory

Welcome to my personal blog. This site was created as an informal description of my build progress in the construction of a Van's RV7 aircraft. A place where family/friends/builders/curiosity seekers can follow along. It is not intended to be a detailed description of every step in the building process as that would be much too time consuming. There are plenty of sites that do a great job in that arena, that is not my intention with this site. My intention is for this to be a philisophical/motivational/inspirational account of the emotional ups and downs of the life changing journey...and it will change your life. I hope this will give you an idea, through my eyes, of what its like to make this transformation. A note to other builders, I am not an expert so do not put your safety at risk by attempting anything you see on this site until you have done your own research, or send me an email so we can discuss it. Any deviations from the plans are not approved, nor endorsed by Van's Aircraft or myself. Thanks for visiting.

Sheryl Getting Her Acro On!

Although this isn't RV related, I just had to share this video in the interest of good ol' aviation fun and inspiration. Last weekend, good friend Steve Bergevin who owns a Giles 202 and flies opposing solo for the Renegades formation team, took Sheryl for her first real acro flight. As you can see in the video, she pretty much smiled from start to finish and Steve said she flew quite well when given the stick.

The G-meter showed +8/-4 at the end of the flight...not too bad for your first acro flight eh?! Shoot, that is more than I did when I flew with Steve. Not only did she not feel queasy, she said she wanted to keep going...definitely one tough lady I am lucky enough to spend time with.

The two things that stood out from our post-flight conversation were "addictive" and "I want to learn how to do that"! How many acro flying careers have started with those words...? Welcome to the "addiction" honey.

Amazing Lake Powell

As you know, we flew out to Vegas last month via Lake Powell and the Grand Canyon. I had the GoPro mounted under the wing...a new location just for this trip. It captured some great footage of our roughly 25 minute flight over Lake Powell. Unfortunately, the mount location contributed a lot of shake to the camera so the video is not what it could be. Still pretty amazing, but the shaking takes away from it.

Here are some screenshots from that video to give you an idea what its like to fly over Lake Powell. When we finally departed the area for the Grand Canyon, I needed to grab a napkin to wipe the drool off my face...amazingly, these pics really don't do it justice. I'm not sure I need to say more...feast your eyes (definitely click to enlarge) on this scenery and daydream about what it will be like to fly your plane here!

Halloween...RV Style!

I gotta tell ya, last week was a totally new experience for me. I actually flew my plane to a Halloween costume party! How many people can say that??

In the absence of our second annual "Hangarween" party this year, we were looking for an alternative. Our friends, fellow RV7 builder Sean Blair and his girlfriend Tracey in Colorado Springs invited us to come down for a party. Of course, instead of driving the roughly 65 miles from Denver to the Springs, we just had to fly, I mean we had to...even if it was less than efficient.

We drove 25 miles to the airport, piled into the plane in full costume and flew for 30 mins, then Sean drove another 30 mins to pick us up. See what I mean by being efficient? But hey...when you have an airplane, you just wanna fly! And a great flight it was...I am bonding with my airplane more and more every flight. We had a great time and it made for some unique pics...

Making the short night flight down to KFLY (Meadowlake)...I just had to snap an in-flight selfie while Sheryl fidgeted with her phone. This is something you don't see everyday! I kept thinking...I sure hope we don't have to make an off airport landing dressed like this.

Sean got us a cheap hangar home for the night at one of the FBO's at KFLY. Here I am unloading the airplane...

Sheryl went all out with her "face mask" costume as she always does! This is her favorite holiday of the year, if you couldn't tell.

A group photo at the party. Sean was "Popped Eye" and Tracey was "Olive Ghoul". They also went all out with some awesome creativity! My costume was bland in comparison, as a Mexican "Day of the Dead".

The ladies looking good as always!

Sean striking a pose...that dangling eyeball kept freaking me out, I had a hard time looking him in his good eye all night!

Definitely had to get some posed shots with airplane before we headed out...again, another way to "use" your RV. I just keep finding ways...KPR!

Flying to Work

About a month ago, I flew into work...about a 5 min flight from my home base. Certainly not an "efficient" commute by any means, but the novelty of such an act is off the charts! Here is a video of me playing around with a different mounting scheme for my GoPro camera. Nothing better than starting the day with a nice landing...
